1 killed, 1 injured in SF Muni train shooting

SAN FRANCISCO — One person was killed and another injured in a shooting on a crowded subway train in San Francisco Wednesday, a city chief said.

Supervisor Myrna Melgar said she was told by San Francisco police that the shooting happened around 10 a.m. on the San Francisco Muni train between Forest Hill and Castro stations. She says that the perpetrator ran out of the train at Castro station and remains at large.

Melgar said the train was packed with passengers at the time of the shooting.

“When the train stopped, the perpetrator ran out along with all the people in the crowded train,” Melgar told The Associated Press.

Melgar said San Francisco deputy chief David Lazar informed her that there was a heated argument on the train before a suspect shot the man, who later died.

“There was a fight between people who may have known each other on the subway before it stopped at Castro,” said Supervisor Rafael Mandelman, representing Castro County. the Castro area, world famous for its LGBT activism. The shooting comes just four days before the San Francisco Pride Parade, which usually draws thousands of people.

San Francisco police spokeswoman Katherine Winters said the shooting had nothing to do with Pride events and was not directed at the LGBT community.

“It’s a busy time right now, we have kids taking the train to summer programs, commuters going to work,” Melgar said. “I just know there are too many guns out there.”

Subway service in the area was suspended due to evidence being collected by the police. According to Melgar, passengers were transported by buses and shuttles.

San Francisco police and transit officials did not immediately respond to phone messages asking for more information.
