100 million songs added to Apple Music catalog

Apple Music is about to hit a big milestone by offering an impressive 100 million songs on its streaming music service.

The music giant told The Associated Press that Apple Music will hit sometime on Monday, according to its internal data. Every day 20,000 singers and songwriters release music on the service.

“It’s a big, big number,” Apple’s global content and editorial director Rachel Newman told the Associated Press. “It’s possible to make, record, and release it more than ever in the history of music, which I find pretty incredible.”

Apple Music considers this milestone to establish itself as the world’s largest music catalogue, with over 80 million songs from YouTube Music, and 82 million songs and podcasts from Spotify, and 90 million songs from Amazon Music.

Although it’s not known exactly which song will make its mark on Apple Music, there’s a good chance it won’t be in the United States or in English, as the service has more and more music from around the world.

When iTunes launched, the service had music in 200 languages ​​and dialects, and half of its content was in English. Now 40% of Apple Music’s offerings are in English, and the number of languages ​​and dialects is 350. The platform’s top charts, once the domains of the USA, UK, Canada and Australia, are now filled with music from Japan, Colombia. Ghana, Nigeria and South Korea.

As the world becomes more digitized, the number of 100 million has accelerated. Songs on Apple Music have doubled in the past four years after adding 50 million in 2018, while the pandemic is seen as momentum as isolated people seek creative means of expression.

Apple Music said the 100 millionth song could be from an unidentified artist.

Apple Inc. introduced iTunes with 200,000 songs for their iPods in 2003 and launched Apple Music seven years ago, with customers in 167 countries and territories now primarily listening to it on their iPhones.

The company highlighted that customers not only hear what’s new, they also browse through old catalogs of artists. In 2015, when Apple Music was launched, reproductions accounted for 20% of the 1,000 most popular songs. Now they add 10%. The average release date for songs is March 7, 2017, a figure that has been pushed by listeners searching for early music.

The streaming music service will celebrate the milestone on Monday by launching a new editorial series called Apple Music Today. The service’s editorial team said it’s all about the story behind a new or old song, and they now have 100 million to choose from.

“We see this as an opportunity for listeners to connect with music they may have already forgotten or unaware of,” Newman said. “And what’s also very important is that they find a new platform for storytelling. We think that’s something we do to preserve the art in music.”
