12-year-old child caught the third fish of his life, barely missed the record

Avid fisherman Tyler Grimshaw, age 12, is once again in the news, this time with himself third The fish of a lifetime, which he described as “an absolute giant”.

Tyler, while fishing the Snake River with his father Lance Grimshaw and local guide Joe Weisner, landed a 9-foot, 11-inch sturgeon, and tied the Idaho record for white sturgeon caught and released by half an inch. Missed.

According to the Idaho Department of Fish and Game, the current record is 119½ inches caught by seven anglers on July 9, 2019, also on the Snake River. Tyler’s catch in inches was 119, but he did so without any outside help that would normally have made him the record-holder.

“Tyler sat on that rod and pumped that fish for 50 minutes,” Weisner told Outdoor Life. “He wasn’t going to hand that stick to anyone. The fish jumped a total of four times. He once jumped right next to the boat—maybe 2 feet away. It was scary.”

“A fish of this caliber, it doesn’t come around very often,” Weisner told KTVB. “This fish was bigger than anything I had ever seen before. I was at a loss for words this was so big. This is one of those moments that was truly incredible. ,

This was actually Tyler’s second sturgeon catch of the day; He turned in a 7-footer on the river in the first 20 minutes. But the best and greatest were yet to come.

“They knew from the beginning of the fight that it was huge,” Tyler’s mother Vanessa Grimshaw told USA Today/For the Win Outdoors.
