In a joint letter (PDF) to the White House on Monday, the two Republicans requested a meeting with Republican Governor President Joe Biden to consider resolving the ongoing crisis on the southern border.
Arizona Govt. South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster posted the letter on his Twitter account, saying he was proud to join 25 other governors in requesting a meeting with the president.
“In the eyes of Biden Admin, the negative effects of the border scene and out of mind and its reckless open border program can no longer be ignored.”
The governors emphasized the damage caused by months of illegal crossings and wrote that Biden’s border policy “created an international humanitarian crisis, stimulated international criminal activity, and opened the floodgates for human traffickers and drug traffickers to endanger public health and Security in our state. ”
They cite the fact that the threat has increased by 500 percent since last year and that this entry is bringing with it criminals and drugs that are affecting all states. Customs and border patrols recorded a total of more than 200,000 encounters with illegal immigrants for the month of August.
The letter said thousands of illegal immigrants from Haiti, Cuba and Venezuela were arriving in Del Rio, Texas.
Democratic Del Rio Mayor Bruno Lozano has called on Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris to fail to attend his hometown as it struggles with an extraordinary illegal immigration crisis that has left border patrol agents struggling to process thousands of people.
More than 15,000 illegal immigrants have entered the United States in recent days, and Del Rio, a population of about 35,000 in Texas, has taken refuge under the border bridge connecting Ciudad Aquana, Mexico.
In a post alongside aerial footage showing thousands of migrants surrounding the crowded bridge in makeshift tents, the mayor wrote, “We need to visit Del Rio in Texas.”
In response to a Twitter post shared by Harris on Saturday, Lozano wrote, “The United States is lagging behind the rest of the world in terms of investment in childcare. We invest less public dollars in early education and care than GDP in almost all developed countries. With our Build Back Better Agenda, OT Potash and I are determined to change that.
Asked about the failure of Harris and Biden to visit Del Rio again, he said, “The United States is failing to protect its borders. Why aren’t you here – Potash. “
Border Patrol Chief Raul Ortiz told Fox News on September 1 that single adult males would be deported under the federal government’s Title Rule 2 rule, although most family units crossing the border illegally would be processed and released into the United States, according to an immigration court.
At a Sept. 1 news conference, Ortiz said deportation flights to repatriate some illegal immigrants to Haiti have already begun.
Governors, meanwhile, say the president did not take responsibility for protecting America’s borders and that states had to take action instead.
“While governors are doing what we can, our constitution requires that the president must faithfully enforce immigration laws passed by Congress. The federal government has not only created a crisis, but also left our states to face challenges that only the federal government has the responsibility to address, ”the letter said.
The governors requested Biden to call a meeting as soon as possible and not more than two weeks after receiving the letter.
