Authorities said two New York City police officers were shot dead during a “shootout” that erupted in the Bronx on Wednesday night, but both of them are expected to fully recover.
The incident occurred near the corner of East 187th Street and Beaumont Avenue in the Belmont area just after 8:00 pm, New York Police Commissioner Dermot Shea said during a press conference Wednesday at St. Barnabas Hospital.
Shi noted that two police officers were shot dead at the 105th precinct almost a year ago.
“We are very lucky today. If you remember, it was on the eve of the last New Year, exactly a year ago, when two officers were shot in our 105th precinct, and they were released the next day. It looks like we’re on this path again today, ”Shi said.
Explaining in detail about the shooting on Wednesday, Shih explained that the officers were contacted by a community member who gave “a fairly detailed description of the person” who had a firearm and responded to the scene. When they approached the man, the man, he said a few words before opening fire “in a matter of seconds.” Uniformed officers then returned fire.
“They go there, tactically discuss how they will approach, and immediately run into this man sitting on the front porch of the building,” Shea said of the officers. “In a few seconds, they engage in a firefight.”
Shea said that a female police officer who worked with the police for about a year and is also a veteran of the armed forces was immediately hit in the right hand. Then the gunman shot her a second time. According to The New York Post, she has been identified as 23-year-old Alejandra Jacobs.
“We believe she returned fire five times, hitting the attacker,” Shea said, noting that the entire incident was videotaped with an internal camera.
“Her partner, when they immediately approach the person, before the shots are fired, gives verbal instructions to take his hands out of his pocket, and immediately the pistol is removed and the shooting begins. He (a male officer) fights a man, fights him to the ground, “Shi said. The incident lasted approximately two to three seconds.
A male officer, Robert Holmes, an eight-year veteran of the forces, was wounded in the right armpit and was taken to hospital.
The mobster, who Shea said was previously arrested, received three blows and was taken to St. Barnabas Hospital for emergency surgery. He has not undergone surgery now and officials believe he will survive. Officials did not identify him.
Shi said firearms were found at the scene and were stolen in Georgia last year.
“Incredible courage tonight. We watched the video and saw the officers doing their job protecting the people of this city with incredible courage, ”said New York Mayor Bill de Blasio. “And then, when visiting their hospital ward, two people of simply extraordinary spirit. The officers who do this work because they want to protect people, they want to save lives.
“This is another example of an out-of-state pistol that hits our city and injures a New Yorker. This is something we have to fight in a completely different way, ”the mayor added.
In a Facebook post on Thursday, New York City police said both officers are doing well and are expected to make a full recovery. Jacobs was discharged from the hospital and is now at home with his family, while Holmes remains in the hospital.
“There are many reasons to be grateful for this #Thanksgiving. Last night in the Bronx, a gunman fired on officers. Two were amazed. Today, a hospitalized officer is driving home just in time to be with his family for the holiday – but not before his gay family gives out heroic care, ”NYPD said in a message along with a video of a female officer leaving the hospital. …
