The First Judicial District Attorney’s Office announced Monday that a 22-year-old man has been sentenced to two consecutive life sentences for two murders in Belmar Park in 2019.
Before sentencing on Friday, Vicente Enrique Orozco was convicted by a Jefferson County jury on two counts of first-degree murder, one count of felony manslaughter and two counts of aggravated robbery on March 10.
Orozco was found guilty of stabbing 19-year-old Rodriguez Rivera multiple times at Lakewood Park on August 15, 2019. The DA’s office said Rivera was playing football with a friend in Belmar Park when he was attacked.
The body of 61-year-old Steven Sandvik was found later in the morning near the Fallen Firefighters Memorial in the park, showing the victim had also been stabbed and robbed several times.
Sandvik was pronounced dead at the scene, while Rivera was taken to a hospital, where he died five days later.
A few days later, based on an anonymous tip, police identified Orozco, 19, as a suspect and arrested him on August 21, 2019.
During sentencing, the Rivera family described the late teen as a “beautiful child” whose future lay ahead of him, the DA’s office said.
Sandvik’s family said he was “a father and husband who will be greatly missed,” the office said.
Orozco was jailed for 15 years for robberies in addition to two consecutive life sentences.
“Today we see justice for the tragedy that took two innocent, random victims away from them, their community, and their families in the years ahead,” said senior deputy district attorney Adam Hepp.
