30% of cancer patients lose their jobs

30% of cancer patients lose their jobs, among many others It is not easy to return to your position when the treatment is over. These are the two issues pointed out by the president of the Balearic board of the Spanish Association Against Cancer (AECC), José Reyes, on the occasion of the World Day against this disease, celebrated on February 4. This Saturday morning, the volunteers and members of the organization formed a human bond in the sand of Can Pere Antoni, an action to give visibility to the disease that can be repeated in other parts of the Balearic Islands.

“This year, we want to emphasize the socioeconomic impact of the disease on the patient and their family. 30% have lost their jobs, and this, in Spain, where a significant part of the population is in a state of economic and social vulnerability, can be explained in many cases. the possibility of ending up in extreme poverty”, explained José Reyes on the beach of Can Pere Antoni. The president of the AECC of the Balearic Islands indicated that “it is very important to put all possible resources to work to prevent cancer patients with conflict situations or problems from working because of the treatment.”

According to data made public by the AECC weeks ago, a total of 6,511 people were diagnosed with cancer in the Balearic Islands, and 2,426 people died of this disease in 2023, which represents an increase of 3.7% compared to 2022 in both cases. The Association, led by José Reyes, set its own goals to improve patient survival and reach 70% by 2030, considering that it is already at 60%.

Once this process is completed, Reyes warned, “We must also consider that the cancer patient who has recovered from the disease, in many cases, does not have the same ability to return to work as before. So, it is very necessary to make adaptations in the work activity and this adaptation is law so that cancer patients can return to work in conditions that are possible. ”

Regarding the measures he requested, José Reyes commented that the central board of the AECC is working on this issue with political groups at the national parliamentary level.

More human relationships

To celebrate World Cancer Day, they organized more human relationships in different parts of the Balearic Islands: in San Juanin, on the farm of Els Calderers (12:30 pm), on the plaza Spain of the Incas (11:30), and at the Ciutadella Cathedral Square (12.30). This Sunday, it will be repeated in Ibiza, in Caló de s’Oli, at 12 o’clock.
