49ers in Bears injury report: Chicago will not have sacked leader Khalil McKay

SANTA CLARA — Bears won’t chase sacking artist Khalil Mack on Sunday, the 49ers’ Jimmy Garoppolo — or Trey Lance.

Mack’s foot injury ruled him out Friday as expected.

Garoppolo will make his second straight start since returning from a calf injury, and unlike last Sunday’s fourth straight loss, he will be backed by Lance, who missed the last game due to a knee sprain.

Since his trade to the Raiders, Mack has tallied six sacks to open his fourth season with the Bears. The Bears’ next most sacks are 5 1/2 of Robert Quinn, who was activated from the COVID reserve list on Friday.

“It’s one of the quickest starts in his career in terms of production,” Negi told Chicago reporters on Friday. “We sometimes have to save Khaleel from ourselves and that’s how we are at the moment.”

covid issues

The Bears (3-4) are facing a range of COVID issues, and it is unknown whether they will have available coach Matt Nagy, who remains on the COVID protocol list and away from the team throughout the week apart from virtual meetings are. Special team coordinator Chris Tabor will fill in for Negi.

Elijah Wilkinson was also activated from the COVID reserve, but fellow offensive tackle Jermaine Effedi was added.

The 49ers have not placed any players in COVID reserves in the past three months, not since three players have worked at the start of training camp.

Other Status Reports

The 49ers will release their injury reports after today’s practice at around 2 pm

Most uncertain are the fates of left tackle Trent Williams (ankle), defensive end D Ford (concussion) and linebacker Aziz Al-Shayer (concussion).

Defensive tackles Jevon Kinlaw (knee) and Maurice Hurst (calf) are expected to sit outside among the 49ers.

Wide receiver Dibo Samuel (calf) was limited in Thursday’s practice after missing Wednesday’s session.

Defensive tackles for the Bears are Akim Hicks (groin), safety Tashon Gipson (hip), wide receiver Zakhim Grant (ankle), linebacker Sam Kamara (knee) and tight end Jesper Horsted (knee).
