49ers mailbag: How much falls on Kyle Shanahan for three-game skid?

SANTA CLARA — The 49ers’ three-game losing streak is on hold for this week’s goodbye, yet my Week 6 mailbag won’t rest, via my Instagram and Twitter rumble:

Why were fans chanting “Fire Kyle” as they exited State Farm Stadium? (@jason_novi)

First, they are not being fired, not now, not until 2022. Fans’ frustration is boiling over because of those play calls, notably fourth-down failures (1-of-5), but third-down issues (3-of- 11). This does not bode well for an aggressive master. However, ownership has its backs, as evidenced by the blessing of Kyle Shanahan that the draft board has been costly, then doubled, by placing Jimmy Garoppolo.

What are the chances that coach Shanahan will leave play-calling duties to McDaniels? (@SF_GAME)

Offensive coordinator Mike McDaniel (note: correct spelling) mixes dry humor with Yale-degree wit to talk weekly. He is Shanahan’s right-hand confidant, and he is the eye in the coach-booth sky. I doubt the play call will change much, and I’m sure Shanahan isn’t leaving that role until the 49ers drop their paychecks. However, evidence shows that Fourth Quarter and Fourth Down is not Shanahan’s specialty.

What’s With The Fourth Down Play Calling? (@traviscampbell79)

Shanahan feels that if he had won close games, he would have been good enough for a 5-0 (pause for laughs). The fourth-down call was troublesome, because (a) four failures are a lot, (b) their nature. Why not have a powerful quarterback (Lance) or your best asset (Debo Samuel) run behind the highly paid Trent Williams and Kyle Juszkic on both 1 to 1 goal-to-go plays (like Samuel’s subsequent touchdowns)? Or call Lance’s number on the fourth-quarter effort instead of Juszczyk? The NFL has the fourth-down stop in Arizona. Good to know now.

Do you think Trey Lance showed enough to keep Faithful hopeful? (@raymondp33)

They better hope he gets better as soon as possible. A left knee sprain will keep him in the training room with Jimmy Garoppolo for the next two weeks. Lance needs to learn the NFL landscape quickly, both on the ground and in the air. This previous loss — nor this losing streak — was not the quarterback’s fault. The 49ers have other issues to correct, such as penalties, injuries and a lack of explosive plays in all three stages.

Hope JG comes back soon. (@alexiapaterakis)

Garoppolo traveled to Arizona, working with a coach on the pregame, and Shanahan hoped to progress with Garoppolo’s calf injury (there’s that word again). Check back in a week. Otherwise buy Nate Sudfeld stock.

Is Jimmy G Single? (@alli_boerema)

He … is linked to the 49ers. The trade deadline is November 2, and it’s hard to imagine his departure, as the 49ers are again learning how quickly they need depth at the quarterback. Plus, no one is eating a suitable draft pick for quarterback with his soaring medical charts.

What would it take for Lenoir to take a shot at one of the CB positions? (@GOOBVILLE)

After starting the first two games, Diomod Lenore hasn’t played a defensive snap in the last two games, and fellow rookie Embry Thomas is a healthy scratch on a regular as coaches put their faith in veterans Josh Norman, Donta Johnson and Dre Kirkpatrick instead. Huh. By the way, Norman complains too much without making a play on the ball.

Why don’t they use Elijah Mitchell on third and smaller plays? (@hps1947)

Rather than end that drive with a pass call to Mitchell or anyone, it would have been great to see 1 to third and move the ball on goal (Lance scrambled on a fourth-down play, which resulted in a grueling run before the goal line). Collision happened.)

Should Lynch and Shanahan be criticized for passing a receiver like Rondell Moore to a guy who doesn’t wear (Aaron Banks) clothes on game day? (@jayjo1921)

Moore, the Cardinals’ flaming rookie, moved up a spot after Banks (number 48, second round). The 49ers, in their defence, drafted Dibo Samuel (2019, second round) and Brandon Ayuk (2020, first round), so there was no need for a wide receiver, as the inner line was not visible. Banks’ body (and preseason shoulder injury) set him back early. Whatever was sought with stability coach Daniel Brunskill on right guard isn’t really paying dividends.

Is 10 wins with this team realistic? (@imthestandard)

more suspicious. An 8-4 finish? They must beat the Colts in the next game (October 24, Levi’s Stadium) to stop the skid and gain momentum for a stretch featuring the Bears (3-2), Cardinals (5-0) and Rams (4-) . 1).
