49ers pregame: Al-Shirre sat down with fellow linebacker Greenlaw; Falcon who sued Fowler

SANTA CLARA – Linebackers Aziz Al-Shirre and Dre Greenlaw will not be fit for the 49ers today due to injuries, which was somewhat expected.

Also anticipated: The Falcons will have sacked leader Dante Fowler available despite a calf injury in the previous game, which limited them to practice last week.

Al-Shirre made 11 tackles in last Sunday’s win in Cincinnati before leaving with an elbow injury. The 49ers’ linebacker corps has captain Fred Warner, who rested on an ankle on Wednesday. Starting next to Warner on the weaker side’s linebacker will likely be Marcel Harris, although Demetrius Flanigan-Fowles will be in the mix for a three-linebacker set.

The second position of intrigue for the 49ers is one that starts with Josh Norman from cornerback. It looks like Embry Thomas will make his second straight start. The 49ers have Deontay Johnson available, who missed Sunday’s game in the wake of the death of his mother.

Rushing option

Look for Jeff Wilson Jr. and Deebo Samuel to split the load to run back the second straight game by dismissing rookie Eliza Mitchell (concussion, knee). Brian Hill was activated from the practice squad on Saturday as an emergency substitute and special-team contributor (16 snaps last week).

This would be Mitchell’s fifth missed game in an otherwise impressive rookie season, in which he has amassed a total of 759 rushing yards. Coach Kyle Shanahan said Friday that he is not optimistic but expects Mitchell to return to Tennessee on Thursday. The 49ers haven’t had a run for 1,000 yards since Frank Gore in 2014.

Also for the 49ers are defensive Maurice Hurst (calf), and offensive lineman Colton McKiewitz. Listed as suspects Friday were defensive tackles from DJ Jones (knee), safety Jakiwski Tart (glutes), and Thomas (concussion).

Josh Rosen would not be in a backup role against his former team as the Falcons disabled the quarterback, along with offensive lineman Josh Andrews and defensive linemen John Kominsky, Marlon Davidson and Jonathan Bullard.

Felipe Franks will serve as Matt Ryan’s backup for the second week in a row, instead of Rosen.

The Falcons’ defending welcomes Ed Ogundeji and Richie Grant back from injuries.
