Learn about the different paths there are to obtaining US citizenship, from naturalization to special options for the military.
Many of the foreigners who come to Deer are looking for long-term citizenship as American citizens. To do this, they must follow a series of requirements during their stay in the country, including good manners and documents obtained depending on how many years they have been in American territory.
Although naturalization is the common route for foreigners seeking citizenship, there are other ways to achieve the same goal. The United States Citizenship and Immigration Services (USCIS, for its acronym in English) reveals six ways to be an American citizen.
Below, you can find out about the routes suggested by Uscis.
Ways to get American citizenship
These are the six ways to get American citizenship presented by the U.S.:
CITIZENSHIP by birth
It is given by those born on American soil or by children of US citizens at the time of their birth.
Citizenship by right of blood
It applies to those born outside the United States with at least one American parent, although certain requirements must be met to pass this right. If you don’t obey them, the process of naturalization through the grandparents is required.
Citizenship by adoption
In adoption situations, a child born abroad and adopted by US citizens automatically acquires their nationality.
Citizenship by descent
Derivation refers to cases where a minor under the age of 18 automatically acquires US citizenship if one of his or her parents naturalizes, provided the child is a legal resident of the country and is in the custody of the naturalized parent.
CITIZENSHIP by naturalization
For citizenship by naturalization, the main requirement is to have the green card for at least five years, be over 18, demonstrate moral character, swear an oath before the Constitution, and pass the English language and civics exams.
CITIZENSHIP by naturalization for the military
Members of the United States Armed Forces are eligible for an expedited naturalization process, even if they are overseas.
