7 alleged criminals killed in clash with army at US-Mexico border

At least seven suspected criminals were killed in clashes with the military in the Mexican city of Nuevo Laredo (northeast) on the border with the United States on Wednesday, local officials said.

The city, the main gateway of trade between the two countries, awoke to reports of gunfire, mainly on the highway leading to the city of Monterrey (north).

The Tamaulipas state security secretary said in a report, “The preliminary balance so far of the attack on military personnel is seven civilians killed.”

Officials assured that the situation was already under control, but classes were suspended and residents were urged to exercise extreme caution on social networks and not to go to at-risk areas.

In late November, various activities were also suspended due to firing and road blockade by alleged criminals.

Nuevo Laredo, with some 425,000 residents, was rocked years ago by various conflicts between drug traffickers for control of this border crossing, also used for drug trafficking.

In this city, it is revealed the presence of the Northeast Cartel, which emerged from the Zetas, a criminal organization created by elite soldiers recruited by drug traffickers, but which has lost its power.

Since a controversial military anti-drug crackdown in December 2006, Mexico has recorded more than 340,000 murders and nearly 100,000 disappearances, most of which are attributed to criminal organizations.
