7 movies based on real events that you can watch for free on RTVE Play

Movies based on true events are an interesting category of cinema. Productions that have the power to transport the audience to important moments in history, offer a unique experience, combine the magic of cinema with real-life events, and show that reality almost always surpasses fiction. From action-packed dramas to thrilling stories of heroic deeds or shocking crimes, movies based on true events capture the essence of life, providing a window into reality! We have selected seven titles available on Play on RTVE.

1. The Auschwitz report

The Auschwitz Report is a film based on the true story of Rudolf Vrba and Alfréd Wetzler, two young Slovak Jews who were deported to Auschwitz in 1942. On April 10, 1944, after meticulous planning and with the help and resistance of their prisoners. , they managed to escape. Weakened and wounded, they crossed the mountains back to Slovakia to meet the resistance and the Red Cross. They compiled a detailed report on the genocide in the countryside.

2. Madame Curie

Actress Rosamund Pike plays Marie Sklodowska-Curie. Born in Poland and living in Paris, she dedicated her life to scientific research and the fight for respect for equality between men and women. His discoveries in the field of radioactivity at the beginning of the 20th century changed the world forever. When he discovered previously unknown radioactive elements, it soon became terrifyingly clear that his research could lead to medical applications that would save thousands of lives, but also to the use of war, which would destroy millions of lives.

3. The ideal palace

In the late 19th century, Joseph Ferdinand Cheval was a postman who traveled daily in the Drôme region, from town to town. On one of these trips, he met the woman of his life, Philomena. From this union will be born Alice. For this woman, whom Joseph loved more than anything else, he embarked on a passionate adventure: building her a unique palace with his own hands. Without giving up, this ordinary man never gave up and spent 33 years building an extraordinary work. The film is based on real events, and the palace can be visited in the Hauterives, south of Lyon.

4. Value

Kenneth Feinber is a prominent lawyer from Washington, DC, who has accepted the task of managing the Compensation Fund for the victims of September 11. Caught between lawyers who want to sue and airline promoters who want to settle, Feinberg has to negotiate with the families of the victims. When he confronts Charles Wolf, a community organizer among those affected and whose wife died in one of the towers, Feinberg begins to learn the human cost of the tragedy.

5. The island of lies

On the night of January 1, 1921, near the island of Sálvora, in the Ría de Arousa, the steamer Santa Isabel sank, with 268 people on board heading to Buenos Aires. 213 of them died in the so-called “Galician Titanic” at the time. At that time, there were no men on the island because they were celebrating the new year on the mainland. Three women, almost all women, saved more than 50 people by navigating the sea in a small boat, braving six-meter waves, thick fog, and sharp rocks in complete darkness. They are Cipriana Oujo Maneiro, Josefa Parada, and María Fernández Oujo, 24, 16, and 14 years old. Their story is told in this historical thriller.

6. Anton, his friend, and the Russian Revolution

A story inspired by the true events of two children, one Christian and the other Jewish, whose friendship has survived prejudice, hatred, and the passage of time. Some children had to live through the violent events of the Russian Revolution and the brutality of the First World War.

7. An original agreement

Two independent houses are connected by the children’s room. This can be a summary of separation from an architectural point of view, separating parents and children in the middle of everything, but it is also a fact and the original idea that the French actors Romane Bohringer and Philippe Rebbot have. A couple in real life for more than 10 years, this is the strange formula they adopted when they separated, knocked down some walls, and built a double house, united by the common space for their children. An idea that they want to bring to the cinema, mixing fiction and reality, is in the film ‘An Original Agreement’.
