86 Euros and 12 hours for food

Spend an entire day inside the series you follow, watch up close the actors you admire and be a part of the scenes that will later be projected onto screens around the world. 300 extras take part in the filming of the second season of ‘La Casa del Dragon’, which faces its last day of recording this Thursday in the monumental city of Cáceres.

Being an extra in King’s Landing, this HBO tale features the old town of Cáceres in its price of change. Extras participating in this shoot earned 86.72 euros net (94.78 gross) for each twelve-hour workday. Overtime hours are paid at 12.25 Euro net. On a general scale, the pay of an extra is regulated by agreement and ranges from 50 to 90 euros per day.

Money isn’t the main reason the extras complain. Some of them have transferred their uneasiness to this newsletter because the conditions they are facing can be improved. Breaks are very short, the food—which is provided in addition to snacks and a sandwich at the end of the day—could be improvised and many times, they regret, they have to wait for the sun to set during breaks. “Although the contract says we must have closed spaces, we are standing in the street or sitting on a filming set,” declares an extra, who cannot provide his identity, as all extras sign a confidentiality agreement. which prevents giving details.

«They take advantage of the fact that most of us go because we like the series but it is not a quality job, but a leisure job; I’m willing to do it for free because the experience is impressive.”

«They take advantage of the fact that most of us go because we like the series. This is not quality work, but comfort work. Nobody works under these conditions unless you like it. I’d prefer to charge nothing and in return get a good deal on food, breakfast…”, lists Extra.

“There are first class and second class workers,” he says of the staff when it comes to sitting at the table. The extra people have no choice but to dine in the tents set up at the Foro de los Balbos. They are given first, second and sweets. “If someone doesn’t like what’s there, they have no other choice,” he details. “We wish breaks were better regulated and more food options were given. In Trujillo – where a large number of extras took part in the filming last Thursday – we barely had 12 minutes to eat”. . The days are marathons, they say.

no mobile phone

Extras must leave their mobiles when they arrive first thing in the morning at the warehouse at the Chaplaincy Industrial Estate, where they get dressed and feature their own. And they don’t get it back until they are back from the shoot. An emergency number is enabled in case someone tries to contact them while recording.

“The House of the Dragon” has not yet completed casting to select additional additions from Cáceres. They have used additional actors who have participated in the previous two films (one for the first season of the series and one in 2016, which corresponds to the seventh season of Game of Thrones). Many repeat.

«The experience is impressive, very beautiful. You see the old part like never before. This is the only thing for which you accept loss of rights. And actually you repeat despite knowing the terms. I am willing to do it for free,” says the addition.
