OC Health Care reported 8,257 new coronavirus cases on Friday, Jan. 14, raising the county’s total since tracking began to 430,675.
On Friday, 1,154 people with COVID-19 were hospitalized in Orange County, including 171 patients in intensive care units. This is 82 people more than on Thursday. A year ago, on January 14, 2,102 people with coronavirus were hospitalized in Orange County.
The Orange County COVID-19 Dashboard updates the percentage of those hospitalized by vaccination status on Thursdays, and 86% of those hospitalized are not vaccinated. This is 1% less than two weeks ago, when 522 people were hospitalized on January 1. Of those in intensive care units with coronavirus, 87% are not vaccinated.
As of Friday, the county had reported five more deaths, raising the number of deaths from the virus in Orange County to 5,921.
County death data is compiled from death certificates or collected through case investigations and can take weeks to process. The most recent recorded death occurred on 8 January.
Of the 5,921 deaths from the virus, 1,222 were residents of skilled care facilities, 647 were in nursing homes, two were inmates in an OC prison and 19 were listed as homeless.
An estimated 315,135 people have recovered from the virus. The number of people who have recovered is based on a cumulative case count over the previous 28 days.
The data posted every day is preliminary and subject to change, the officials stress. Additional information may become available as individual case investigations are completed.
