“Either you learn or others are going to do it and they will tear you apart.” Music looks on with concern for AI disruption to the rest of the arts

Composer and bassist of Nina Polaca Berto Rojo says” The musicians see that the sky is very cloudy and we are happy that it is not raining yet”. Artistic or cultural fields such as painting, photography, video, writing or education create a strange uneasiness with the extraordinary background music of artificial intelligence apps: will the same happen to us? Think of the actors and producers.

Rojo is interested in revolution  and already uses non-production software in his artistic work, for example to intensify models. But he believes the great music disruptor has yet to emerge: “It’s a long time ago now. It’s very different for an al to understand an image than a song, a song carries a lot more information. We’re still a long way from being able to tell Al to ‘make me a Madonna song like Chopin played on the piano,’” he says.

Google released a system called MusicLM in January that precise generates music from text. For example: “A blend of reggaeton and electronic dance music, with a broad, ethereal sound. It stimulate a feeling of being lost in space and the music is crafted in such a way that it bring to mind a sense of wonder and amazement while still being danceable. “This is a request for one of the 30-second tunes created by Google. The application has not yet been opened. Rojo hears it and believes that “if you don’t say Al did it, it’s music they can enjoy”, even though it’s not the work of a man. This is the tune Google got from that request:

This Google innovation is not just one of the last. Famous disc jockey David Guetta sang to Eminem at a concert, but the voice was not the rapper’s real voice but a similar but artificially produced voice “I’m sure the future of music is in Al. Of course. There’s no doubt about that. But as a musical instrument,” Guetta told the BBC.

What if the music was (somewhat) different?

These are just two examples of Al’s pursuit of music from different aspects: melody, arrangement, voice, lyrics. It’s hard to imagine an immediate future in which Al doesn’t have a role in artistic creation, at least as a “tool,” as Guetta puts it. Seismic magnitude probably depends on the inherent properties of each artifact. Music has two perceived advantages over other subjects. The first is that there is a more direct relationship between the composer and his audience than other subjects; It’s rare not to want to meet a singer or see him live. The second is that music has already been distorted by a lot of software and digitally limited for years. Some styles naturally internalize melody creation from others, such as using samples or generating sounds with a computer.

None of the experts consulted by EL PAÍS consider these two exceptions to be final or impenetrable. The pace of change in this field is unprecedented and anything is possible: “We have no idea what the world will be like in five years,” Barto Rojo said. “Either you learn, or others do and they tear you apart,” he said. This motion has creative suggestions: “We believe that the more complex a song is, the more different kinds of creative processes are needed or the more difficult it is to get an excellent final result,” explains Chiara Hellquist, who is director of Vevo Spain, a digital platform for music videos. But we were saying the same thing when MP3 came out and people started listening  it with the worst quality vinyl, would we have more volume and the speed at which the songs would come out would be more intense, but we’ll see.”

If new songs by famous artists are constantly being released, how many more songs can be created with the help of Al? “We’ll modify .Now I think it’s difficult to speed up creation, but who knows, maybe even 20 years ago it would have been impossible for an artist to release a song every month. “It’s almost essential to keep you in the limelight now,” Hellquist said. New, more personalized platforms may also emerge. Five years ago, few people thought that TikTok would have an explosion of melody snippets for them. There are now themes where 15-second special platforms are the norm.

Another obstacle to Al’s explosion in music is a more direct relationship with the creator, which is much less common, for example, in illustration or video. But why can’t there be many more “musicians”, with less knowledge of music, who for some reason know how to make hits with Al?The composer, Barto Rojo, believes that this musical space can be conquered by people who know how to write requests on a machine: “This type of person can build a community of fans around their music and Al can make a living using it. “The artist is the one who decides what will remain and what will not be given. Another thing is how much free Al will they be able to use and how much they will be able to freely monetize that music,” he said. The possibility of flooding has not been completely ruled out, but will a new platform come out where we can consume more personalized music?

New bedroom pop artists and urban dwellers are composing directly with computers in urban areas, using artificial intelligence to create and adjust their music. Miguel Martorell, director of Southern Europe at Altafontein, suggests that this approach could be interesting for those who don’t need to create.

AI can potentially revolutionize the role of bookstores by swiping pre-recorded and royalty-free libraries for video or advertising. This is particularly useful for background producers who use standard library music, such as ‘Quiet Piano Music’, which can be customized by each producer with specific parameters.

Al applications are enhancing the natural evolution of music by adjusting demos to achieve great sound. These applications analyse and apply the mastering of various rock songs, ensuring the volume of tracks remains close to rock.

Tools like Lalal, Supertone, and BandLab offer a fully generative Al, creating synthetic voices without post-production technical requests. These tools improve existing content without the need for app creation or studio time. Berto Rojo describes an Al that can transform a home-recorded bass track into a professional sound, opening up new possibilities for sound quality.

Antonio Luke, a sceptic of newcomers, explains that pop rock songs are short and not complex, with some being successful and others not. He challenges artificial intelligence to create hits if it were easy. In other genres, not all songs are 100% original, as most rap is based on samples, with remixing and layering of melody to create new songs. This is common in some styles and has never been a problem.

The rapid growth of artificial intelligence (AI) in the arts is causing concern among artists and critics. Some fear that machines will bore them, while others believe that AI already exists as culture. Some argue that AI can be a useful tool, while others prefer to refactor existing creations. Despite threats from technology companies, many artists see AI as a joke and continue to adapt to the changing landscape. The future of AI is uncertain, but it remains a topic of debate and debate
