A Mexico full of substitutes rescues tie with Jamaica

KINGSTON, Jamaica ( Associated Press) — With a goal from Luis Romo, an alternative team from Mexico rallied to draw 1-1 with Jamaica in a CONCACAF Nations League match on Tuesday.

Leon Bailey put the hosts in front after four minutes, but Romo leveled in the 45th with a header.

“It was a game in general terms well played by Mexico with enough control of the game with a predisposition to win it with many situations created, but the performance of the rival goalkeeper prevented us from winning it, which I think we should have done,” said Argentine coach Gerardo Martino.

With the result, Mexico reached four points and placed second in Group A of this tournament that is a qualifier for the next edition of the Gold Cup. Jamaica is the leader with five units, although with one more game and Suriname is at the bottom with a unit.

The tournament will resume in March next year.

For the Mexicans, the meeting served as a testing laboratory for Argentine coach Gerardo Martino to observe players ahead of the World Cup in Qatar.

The “Tata” Martino released 16 of 38 players ahead of the two Nations League matches in which he watched players who could complete the roster for the World Cup that opens in November.

“In short, the positive part is the way in which the players trained and looked for a place in each game and in this way they look for a place on the final list,” added the strategist. “Some have had more time to justify themselves than others who played little or like Erik Lira who hasn’t played”.

After this game, the elements that are in that bubble will have only one more opportunity to show themselves, a friendly match against Paraguay on August 31, which will not be a FIFA date and in which Martino will only have elements from the Mexican league.

Mexico debuts in the World Cup on November 22 when it measures strength against Poland. Then he has a date with Argentina and closes the first round against Saudi Arabia.

“I am happy with the way they gave themselves in the concentration, such a long concentration and with so many players is not usual, but there was no other way to do it and they adapted well to the problem of training with 38”, added the “Tata Martino. “In football there were positive and negative things, but they allow us to analyze the conditions we have.”

The Mexicans had the first clear arrival of the match at the opening minute, when Luis Chávez took a powerful shot that was rejected by the goalkeeper. The rebound was free for Uriel Antuna, who missed the definition in front of the goal.

Jamaica responded a couple of minutes later when Bailey received a cross from the left, headed in against poor Mexican marking and converted into the left post of the goal defended by Rodolfo Cota.

The hosts were dangerous again in the eighth when Shamar Nicholson hit a header that crashed off the crossbar.

Mexico tried to level, first at 21 with a shot by Orbelín Pineda that went wide and then with a shot by Kevin Álvarez that was saved by goalkeeper Andre Blake.

Bailey flirted with her second goal in the 35th with a shot that went just wide.

When the first half expired, in a stopped ball play charged by Chávez, Romo hit a header that hit the right post of Blake.

In the second half, the Jamaicans came close to regaining the lead when Nicholson’s shot went past Cota, but Romo deflected over the goal line to prevent the goal.

Mexico approached danger at 67 with an attempt by Diego Lainez that was rejected from a corner kick by goalkeeper Blake.

El Tri knocked on the door again in the 74th with an attempt by Chavez, but Blake again reappeared to avoid the damage.

The match was played in the last minutes under heavy rain and the Mexicans only threatened again with a shot from Lainez that Blake rejected.
