At least 20 people died after a shooting that took place in the city of Lewiston, Maine, United States, on Wednesday night, according to several police sources.
Between 50 and 60 people were injured in the incidents, although it was unclear how many were shot, sources told CNN.
Earlier, the Androscoggin County Sheriff’s Office said it was investigating two shooting incidents, according to a Facebook post.
The Lewiston Police Department identified the businesses where the two shootings took place as Schengees Bar and Grille and Sparetime Recreation, police said in a Facebook post. Schemengees is a bar and grill restaurant, according to its website, and Sparetime Recreation is a recreational bowling alley.
CNN has reached out to Schengees and Sparetime Recreation but has not yet received a response.
“We are urging all businesses to close their doors or residences in the area while we investigate,” the sheriff’s office said.
The suspect remains at large, according to authorities. Security cameras captured the image of the attacker.
Maine State Police said they are responding to a shooting situation in Lewiston, in a Facebook post.
Minutes later, while authorities were investigating the two shooting incidents, a third report of shots was reportedly developed.
Lewiston Public Information Officer Derrick St. Laurent told the Sun Journal that another shooting was reported at the Walmart Distribution Center on Alfred A Plourde Pkwy.
Authorities asked residents to shelter in place. “Please stay inside your homes with the doors closed,” Maine State Police said in X, “authorities are currently investigating multiple locations.”
Lewiston City Councilman Robert A. McCarthy told CNN that schools are currently closed and officials are asking people to shelter in place immediately.
For its part, the Central Maine Medical Center confirmed that they reacted to the shooting of the victims. The medical center said that at the moment there are no details on the number of victims. The center said they are coordinating with area hospitals to receive patients.
Lewiston is located 58 km north of Portland and is located in Androscoggin County.
