‘A Strange Loop’ won a Pulitzer. Now it’s coming to Broadway.

“A Strange Loop,” Michael R. Jackson’s Pulitzer Prize-winning meta-musical, is coming to Broadway this spring.

The show’s producers announced Monday that the musical will play at the Lyceum Theatre; He didn’t announce specific dates, but it plans to open before the eligibility deadline for this season’s Tony Awards, which is expected to take place in late April.

The show is a self-referential musical comedy about a black gay musical theater writer trying to write a musical about a black gay musical theater writer. Highly introspective and sexually straightforward, Playwrights Horizons was staged on Broadway in 2019 in association with Page 73 Productions. New York Times critic Ben Brantley called it “happily oppressed” and noted that it contains “an assortment of infectious, rich harmonic melodies that will leave your grandparents humming the theater. That is, if they hadn’t gone out first.” “

The musical went on to win the 2020 Pulitzer Prize in Drama, and was described by Pulitzer as “a meditation on universal human fears and insecurities”.

Since November, “A Strange Loop” has been playing at the Woolly Mammoth Theater in Washington, where it received rave reviews from the Washington Post. Critic Peter Marx called it “amazingly inventive” and “exhilarating”.

Jackson said he was delighted to see the musical finding a home on Broadway. “I think it’s important because this show is one that has made its way out of nowhere, and sticks to its guns and itself,” he said. “That’s not often the case with new music.”

And does he believe musicals can succeed in a Broadway dominated by jukebox musicals and film adaptations? “The challenge I put up to myself is that ‘A Strange Loop’ is a big, dark, and weird American Broadway show,” he said. “I believe we can entice visitors to come to participate.”

The musical is directed by Stephen Brackett and choreographed by King Feather Kelly; The Broadway cast has not yet been announced. The Broadway run will be produced by Barbara Whitman.
