A tsunami up to one meter high has triggered alarms in Japan

The meteorological authorities of Japan activated this Monday a tsunami alert of up to one meter in the Izu Islands, south of Tokyo, and at other points along the Pacific coast. where it is made an earthquake and no damage has been reported so far.

The earthquake occurred at 5:25 local time (5:25 Chilean time on Sunday) in the water near Torishima island at a shallow depth, and of an undetermined extent, as reported by the Japan Meteorological Agency (JMA).

After the earthquake, the JMA warned of the risk of tsunamis of around one meter in Kochi prefecture (southwest) and the coast of Chiba, east of Tokyo.

After 7:25 local time (7:25 pm Sunday in Chile), The height of the sea on the island of Hachijojima is 60 cm (about 290 kilometers south of Tokyo), the southernmost of the main Izu islands and has a population of about 8,000 inhabitants.

In Chiba and Kochi, the tsunami reached a height of almost one meter. Minor floods were observed in other islands of Izu, an archipelago administratively dependent on Tokyo, as well as the Ogasawara islands, where a tsunami warning was also issued.

Japan Meteorological Agency urged the population to leave all coastal areas affected by the risk of continuous sudden changes in sea level.

The Tokyo Metropolitan Area Government reported that No reports of damage caused by the tsunami have been received at this time. and noted that it continues to analyze the situation with the Coast Guard and meteorological authorities.

The earthquake and the alert occurred on Monday after another earthquake of the same magnitude was recorded on Thursday. magnitude 6.6 in the Pacific south of the Izu Islands, which also led authorities to warn of the risk of a tsunami.
