A video about a Christmas party leaves Boris Johnson in another mess.

LONDON – British Prime Minister Boris Johnson for a week denied dangerous allegations that his employees violated isolation rules by hosting a party last Christmas when such celebrations were banned under government-imposed coronavirus restrictions.

Late Tuesday, the government’s history appeared to have weakened when a video emerged showing senior officials joking about just such a party four days after they reportedly gathered to grab a bite to eat, drink wine, and play party games at Downing. straight.

These revelations shook the Johnson government as Britain and the rest of the world enter a second vacation season, shattered by the new option and facing the anger and frustration of exhausted citizens.

Critics accused Johnson of lying and trying to hide what happened. This was accompanied by the anger of some Britons, who at the time of isolation rules did not even allow them to say goodbye to dying relatives.

Amid growing pressure on the premier even some of his own lawmakers publicly urged him to clarify his story… On Tuesday night, Metropolitan Police covering London said they were reviewing the video.

The reports of the Downing Street party, which first appeared in the Daily Mirror, did not suggest that Mr. Johnson himself was present at any of the celebrations. The video released by ITV, in which employees conduct a mock press conference inquiring about the aftermath of such a party, does not fully confirm that the event took place.

But the video shows that senior staff were aware of the risk of being asked about the Downing Street party and did not receive a credible response. The prime minister did not deny that the event took place, but said that any meeting that happened was held in accordance with Covid protocols.

The video shows Allegra Stratton, then Johnson’s press secretary, at a press conference rehearsal while her Downing Street counterpart plays a journalist. At the time, Ms. Stratton was preparing to hold White House-style press conferences, though the idea was ultimately scrapped.

When asked about the reports of Downing Street Christmas Party, she laughed and replied, “I went home,” and then asked, “What to do?”

“May I have cheese and wine? It was a business meeting, you can hear Ms. Stratton speak. “This fictional party was a business meeting,” she continued, before laughing and adding, “And it wasn’t socially distanced.”

Opponents seized on the video as further evidence of familiar and devastating criticism: a conservative-led government applies one set of rules to itself and another to the rest of the population. It took a heavy toll at the onset of the pandemic, when confidence in the government was severely shattered after Mr. Johnson’s former top adviser, Dominic Cummings, drove hundreds of miles to his parents’ home during his isolation.

In response to the video, opposition Labor leader Keir Starmer accused the government of misleading the public. “People all over the country followed the rules, even when it meant they were separated from their families, locked up and – unfortunately for many – were unable to say goodbye to their loved ones,” he said.

“They had a right to expect the government to do the same,” he added. “It’s a shame to lie and laugh at this lie.”

Mr. Johnson is due to answer questions about the matter in Parliament on Wednesday afternoon.
