After landing, Harold, now a tropical depression, causes torrential rain The states of Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas in northeastern Mexico warned the National Meteorological Service (SMN) on Tuesday.
In its most recent report, SMN stated that as of 3:00 p.m. local time (21:00 GMT), “the center of the system was on land over Texas, United States.” 28 kilometers (km) ENE of Nuevo Laredo, Tamaulipas State, and 170 km SE of Piedras Negras, Coahuila.
He added that Harold is progressing with maximum sustained winds of 55 kilometers per hour (km/h) and gusts of 75 km/h, moving west-northwest at 33 km/h, and continuing to weaken.
SMN stated that Harold’s circuit has “punctual torrential rains (from 150 to 250 millimeters (mm)) in Chihuahua, Coahuila, Nuevo León, and Tamaulipas, and winds gusting 50 to 70 kilometers per hour (km/h) and possible dust storms, hurricanes, and tornadoes in the north of the named states.
He also warned that the rains caused by Harold “will be accompanied by electric shocks and strong gusts of wind that could cause landslides, rising river and creek levels, overflows, and flooding in areas of the named states.”
In view of these conditions, the Meteorológico de México called on the population to heed its warnings and follow the recommendations of the state authorities and civil protection.
Harold is named after Hurricane Don, and the eighth cyclone of the Atlantic season torments Arlene, Bret, Cindy, Gert, Emily, and Franklin.
Its impact on northeastern Mexico comes just two days after Hurricane Hilary swept through the northwestern part of the country, killing at least four people in Baja California, Baja California Sur, and Sinaloa.
The Mexican government last May forecast the formation of up to 38 named cyclones in the 2023 season, five of which would hit the country.
Of these, between 16 and 22 systems could be in the Pacific Ocean and between 10 and 16 in the Atlantic.
