Alicante, December 11, 2023. Alicante has completed the construction of the first non-tactical roundabout in Spain in the Las Atalayas business area, within the process of renewal and modernization of this advanced industrial space. The action, promoted by the Local Economic and Social Development Agency of the Alicante City Council (ALDES ‘Impulsalicante’), was carried out by the construction company Pavasal with an investment of 234,951 euros, after being awarded a contract in which 15 companies participated. , and which represents a unique milestone in innovative, accessible and eco-sustainable mobility.
This innovation, developed at the intersection between Chelín and Dracma streets, and which favors the development of urbanization in the surrounding areas, aims to facilitate the passage and flow of people in this service area, creating an area of intermediate landscaped pedestrian traffic by reducing vehicle circulation to one lane on each side of it, connecting four blocks of the industrial area that brings together the largest companies in Alicante.
The Councilor for Employment and Development and head of the Local Development Agency, Mari Carmen from Spain, explained that “this is a new, sustainable, accessible action designed for people working in the business area and which we promote within the project. transformation of the city of ‘Atalayas. Business City 2025’, within its qualification as an Advanced Industrial Area.”
“It is a new concept of the relationship between pedestrians and vehicles that prioritizes the movement of people over the car and improves the image of the landscape and sustainability of the industrial area by introducing a space in the garden of about 700 square meters,” he explained. the councilor.
From Spain he also pointed out that “this is a strategic action that should mark a new way of understanding industrial spaces when it comes to guiding public investment in the future and that includes the continuation of ‘Atalayas. Business City 2025’ ahead of the business areas of the Valencian Community”, emphasized the councilor.
The Councilor for Employment and Development, also responsible for ALDES ‘Impulsalicante’, also recalled that this step fits the proposals prepared by the Commission for the Recovery of Alicante created after the Covid pandemic, both approved by the Plenary Session of the City Council. .in Alicante, especially in measure 1 of the report of the Economic, Innovation and Employment Recovery Subcommittee, which established the goal of “Comprehensive development of the industrial areas of the city of Alicante and expansion of the available industrial land in the city in Alicante”.

Living industrial space
The non-roundabout project allows for the development of a more efficient space for productive units and a more livable space for workers and other users, through a new space strategy to facilitate the crossing of people, limit the movement of the road to singular points, create new areas. for the enjoyment of public space, facilitating the installation of new terraces where catering establishments can be located, expansion of existing ones or expansion of green areas, without the need for major urban planning operations.
In addition, the non-roundabout is configured as a space opposite to conventional roundabouts. In other words, it draws a space where the asphalt does not intersect the pedestrian. Upon reaching the meeting point, each road continues along the corresponding perpendicular road, which separates one from the other and creates a soft platform in the interstitial space between them.
In this way, the non-roundabout creates a spatial continuum for people, but not for cars or trucks. You can go from one sidewalk to another without stepping on the asphalt, safely. Since there are no crossings between vehicles and between vehicles and pedestrians, the probability of accidents is greatly reduced. The inner heart of the non-roundabout features a large green carpet of 700 square meters, an area larger than any possible roundabout, and direct connection to other pedestrian and accessible areas.
