Forbes rules: Bernard Arnault is the richest man in the world. Amancio Ortega, on the other hand, was dropped from the top-10 of the list but continues to command the category in Spain. According to the same source, the fortune of the native of Basdongo de Arbas is estimated at 72 billion euros.
Despite having such a huge amount of money disbursed in his bank accounts, the 87-year-old businessman and Inditex founder continues to live with the complacency of the past when he was a true stranger. Any other billionaire would show off his wealth just to add some crazy car to his domain, but with Ortega it’s different.
Amancio boasts of barely three cars in a collection because it is cheap. From a French car in the 1970s for which he barely paid a euro—the Peseta at the time—to a more modern car that brought back the best of automotive engineering to the Ortega family. We present them to you:
Renault 5: Amancio Ortega’s first car
This Renault 5 was acquired by the businessman sometime before the inception of Inditex. He paid no more than 10 thousand euros for such a simple as usual car. The R-5 had a 782 cc displacement engine with which it developed only 30 CV of maximum power. With all these internal assemblies, the model from the French manufacturer reached a top speed of 90 kmph.
Volkswagen Golf 1974: Amancio Ortega went unnoticed
Already when he was starting to make a name for himself in the business world, Amancio Ortega continued with the same tendency to go unnoticed. Renault then bought the 1974 Volkswagen Golf, another basic car. Underneath its frame was a 1.8-litre inline 4-cylinder engine.
