America-MG hosted Santos at the Independencia today (14), and won the duel 1–0, valid for the 22nd round of Brasileirao, making Luan’s debut for Peix disappointing. Coelho was on the defensive, taking the risk in a counterattack, with Pedrinho’s goal scored in the 13th minute of the first half.
The result guaranteed the home team its fourth consecutive victory in the competition. In addition, he ended Paulistas’ invincibility under the command of Coach Liska.
With the win, America jumped to 30 points and overtook Santos in the table. Although they have the same score, the miners have more wins and are in eighth place, while Peixe is in tenth place.
The visitors went to Belo Horizonte, not knowing what it was like to lose with a new coach. Santos came from two draws, against Fortaleza and Fluminense, and a win over Botafogo. Now, Peixe returns to the field again next Sunday (21) against So Paulo in the classic, at Villa Belmiro.
Coelho has appointed earlier on Thursday (18), against the Tricolor Paulista, but for the Copa do Brasil. Playing in their domain, the US would be looking to reverse a 1-0 defeat in the first leg of the quarter-finals to advance in the tournament.
Who did well: Pedros
The American forward was the most dangerous on the field in a lukewarm game with little creativity. Decisive, it was through his feet that the main plays of the home team passed. The number 29 tasked Peixe’s players with his pace on the sides and besides the goal, he had other opportunities.
Who was worse: Madison
Peixe’s side left something to be desired in the match, unable to be productive in attack and left with a lot of room in their climb. It was also from his fault that goal play came about, when he tried to guess a pass in the middle of the field and opened a path in Santos’s defence. The US took advantage of this gap and managed to capitalize on the move.
On loan to Peixe, the attacking midfielder made his debut for the club. The 29-year-old entered the final leg in 31 minutes and managed to do very little on the field. It was his first game since February 19 this year, when he played for Corinthians in a match for Paulisto against Botafogo-SP. He was also not listed by the Corinthians since the April 21 match against Portuguesa-RJ.
At home, Coelho managed to defend himself well and was dismissed swiftly in dangerous counterattacks. This took advantage of the speed of their wings to lead to the rise of goals and other main offensive plays. America-MG didn’t give the opponent much room to make up for and ended up with more shots even with less ball possession. In Santos’ main move, Cavichioli was key to guaranteeing victory.
Peixe had control of the actions for most of the game, but it was difficult to translate possession dominance into scoring opportunities. The team’s midfield sector was short of inspiration and could not launch the attack, even as Carlos Sánchez looked to get the ball out. Liska’s men launched several counterattacks and were unable to recover quickly after the goal.
I start with the ball on the post
The teams began to duel, but with difficulties in the making. So much so that the main opportunities arose in the mistakes of the opponents. During the first minutes, Santos began to control the actions and, after a steal in America’s defense, nearly opened the scoring.
Marcos Leonardo got into the field and finished on the post, but the play was not worth it as the lineman signaled offside. However, footage from the broadcast showed replays that the fish gunner position was clearly legal. So, if it were a target, VAR would probably be triggered.
Rabbit’s deadly counter
At 13 minutes Peixe had a bucket of cold water. America-MG got a quick move to the left side of the attack. Pedinho was called up and had the opportunity to advance into the field and get stronger in the corner of the goal. Joo Paulo touched the ball but could not avoid the leak.
angelo on the bench
Santos’ promise started the match between the reserves and was triggered by Liska in the 12th minute of the final leg. He also tried a few individual plays, but could not contribute much due to the team’s lack of creativity.
almost a target
America still had another great chance to score. Wellington Paulista scored in the 20th minute of the second half and his first touch was a major threat to a defended goal by Joo Paulo. The experienced striker, approaching the area, sent a bomb, which exploded on the beam and went off. He didn’t just raise the score.
