AMLO celebrates peace between Hamas and Israel

President Andrew Manuel López Obrador celebrated the ceasefire between Israel and the Islamist group which allows the release of Israeli hostages, the release of Palestinians, and the entry of humanitarian aid into Gaza.

At the morning conference at the National Palace, López Obrador hoped that progress would continue toward lasting peace in that area.

“I am happy that these negotiations have started, even with the exchange of prisoners, but this is already a step and I celebrate it, the release of hostages, the entry of humanitarian aid, and I hope that progress will continue for the benefit of all,” he said.

The Government of Israel and the Islamist group Hamas agreed on Monday to extend the ceasefire, the exchange of hostages, and the entry of aid into Gaza for two more days, giving a break to the two million Gazans who suffered a month and a half of incessant bombardment and hopes of Israeli families hoping to recover their loved ones.

The temporary cease-fire agreement implemented on Friday contemplates a final extension of up to ten days if Hamas surrenders 10 hostages per day.

Beyond some minor inconveniences, both sides respected the agreement, which saw the release of 69 prisoners held in Gaza and 150 Palestinian prisoners in Israeli prisons.

These releases have been extended for the past four days, and include this Monday the release of 11 hostages, six of whom have Argentine nationality, and 30 prisoners.

“In the case of Gaza, Israel, management is done. A job is done, it does not stop, the papers are done, and Alicia Bárcena, Secretary of Foreign Affairs, has been dedicated to that for a long time,” he stressed.

The native of Tabasco asked to wait for the progress of the efforts made by his Government for the release of the Mexicans.

“There is communication with the relatives, but we will wait (…) Progress has been made, this is not the only thing that has been done, we have made progress and we hope that the situation will be good,” he explained.
