The president of Chile, Gabriel Boric, took AMLO and nine other heads of state to sign a document called the “Santiago Commitment.”
It is enough to read point number one to know that the president of Mexico does not know what he is signing. The most important section obliges the signatories to “Care and protect democracy, respect the Constitution, the laws and the rule of law…”
It also says that rulers are obliged to condemn violence and promote dialogue, that differences must have a peaceful solution, always respecting human rights.
Two days after the signing, the president of Mexico arrived in the country to veto the presence of the Judiciary on national holidays with the argument that they are against his government and the “reform.”
Boric seems to have written the text with a special dedication to López Obrador. Of all the signatories, the Mexican president stands out as the most authoritarian of all, acting as a habitual violator of all democratic norms.
The “Santiago Commitment” was signed to commemorate fifty years since the coup in Chile against President Salvador Allende. The purpose is to tell the world, but especially in Latin America: no longer a dictatorship.
There will never be a pinchetazo, never again the coercive force of the military on civil institutions. Boric’s message is addressed to those who imitate in their countries what the “gorilla” did: violation of the separation of powers, dissolution of the Judiciary to impose ministers and judges in their own way, persecution and punishment of freedoms, jailing enemies, staging coups d’état to annul election results.
López Obrador heard, but did not hear, the speech of the President of Chile. In the photos he appears with the authoritative attitude of a facho and loses his sight forever. Tan did not want to be understood – when asked by a reporter – he said that the Santiago Commitment is “wonderful” because it is pacifist and talks about the unity of peoples.
AMLO claims to be an ardent admirer of Salvador Allende, but he knows he is more like Augusto Pinochet. Therefore, he has been militarizing the country for five years, handing over positions, businesses and multimillion-dollar resources to the Armed Forces to guarantee their submission when he needs it.
López has Pinochet DNA. He, like the coup general, destroyed institutions and decades of political success. He, as the head of one of the bloodiest and most repressive regimes in recent history, wanted to send his enemies into exile or bury him in prison.
López Obrador went to Chile to condemn a coup when he was preparing another one in his country. When he illegally used all public resources to build a powerful electoral machine that managed to force Claudia Sheinbaum to the presidency.
The signing of the “Santiago Commitment” is another simulation of the most authoritarian leader Mexico has ever had. He dresses like a democrat abroad when he wants to be Pinochet inside.
