President Andrés Manuel López Obrador (AMLO) reported that a letter had been sent to the railway concessionaires to establish a passenger trains.
During his ‘morning’ conference he said that he hopes that in the month of November there will be an answer from the concessionaires regarding the plan to build new routes for the transportation of train passengers. “We’re going to do it one way or another,” he said.
“Progress has been made, letters have been sent to invite the concessionaires to discuss this issue, the Secretary (of Communications and Transportation) Jorge Nuño has sent them to the representatives of the railway companies so that they discuss this issue. , no later than November this year, we will have a proposal,” he said.
AMLO will give priority to companies with railway concessions
President López Obrador explained that his government will seek to use a clause of concessions so that his government can use the railways for passenger train services.
“What is sought is the application of a clause of concessions, according to that clause, the Mexican government can use the railways for passenger train services throughout the country. There is that clause, therefore, we consider it important to put this clause into practice,” he said.
In addition, he reported that he would give preference to companies that have such concessions to commit, “in a reasonable time,” to establishing a railway system on their lines.
However, if for some reason they do not accept, López Obrador assured that his government will be free for the State to create train services.
“If for some reason they do not accept, we are free so that the State can implement the passenger train service directly or concession it to other companies,” he said.
