AMLO’s package of initiatives requires tax reform

osé Ignacio Martínez Cortés, the Coordinator of the Laboratory of Analysis of Commerce, Economy, and Business (LACEN) of UNAM, assures that the package of initiatives sent by President Andrés Manuel López Obrador on Monday in the Chamber of Deputies needs a tax reform that will finance them.

During an interview for Aristegui, Live Martínez emphasized that the proposal presented by LACEN is more than a simple tax reform, proposing a tax reform that can generate annual income essential to driving the necessary changes.

According to his calculations, a successful implementation of a tax reform could increase up to 10.7% of GDP, which can have a transformative effect on the national economy.

However, Martínez warned that, until now, no specific suggestions had been found for government tax reform.

He emphasized the importance of opposition, and political actors should consider this proposal beyond partisan disputes, recognizing its potential to transform the formal economy and combat the illicit and informal economy.

Regarding the resources set aside to fund pensions, Martínez expressed concern about the viability of the proposed reform. He pointed out that using resources from autonomous organizations and state companies without guaranteeing their financial viability would be “dangerous” and unrealistic.

Martínez assured that action is urgent, considering the imminent impact on millions of workers who depend on the pension system. He urged a strong tax reform, accompanied by a detailed analysis of its implementation and consequences.
