nominal16 November 2022

Youth activists are demanding that governments take decisive action as high-level talks continue at the COP27 climate summit in the Egyptian city of Sharm el-Sheikh. Eleven-year-old Indian climate change activist Licypriya Kangujam is demanding that the United States and other rich countries compensate poor countries who are bearing the brunt of the climate change crisis. Kangujam confronted UK Energy and Environment Secretary Zac Goldsmith on Monday over the UK government’s arrest of climate change activists from environmental organization Just Stop Oil and other organisations, while activists perform acts of civil disobedience every day.

Licypriya Kangujam: “When are they going to release the activists against climate change? The government is putting them in jail for opposing oil and nuclear energy. When are you going to release them?”

“When are you going to release climate change activists?” Eleven-year-old activist Licypriya Kangujam asked the UK Environment and Energy Minister, who walked away to avoid her questions. Kangujam then explains why he confronted Goldsmith.

Licypriya Kangujam: “Climate change activists should not be arrested, they should not be arrested for protesting peacefully. Apart from this he cannot do anything. But I want to ask you that if you cannot do anything then why are you a minister? why is he in [cumbre climática] COP27?”.
