Anti-Instagram app challenges users to be authentic

Perfect photos on Instagram have become so predictable.

“You think ‘my life isn’t nearly as cool as this person’,” said Jason Howell, host of online tech network TWIT. “It’s the comparison that I think a lot of people put to themselves based on the content of the feed they’re watching.”

He’s testing a new social media app called BeReal, which challenges users to be more authentic.

The app is rapidly gaining popularity and describes itself as authentic, intuitive and candid.

You post still photos, and you still have followers (which you have to approve), but there’s a twist: You only post once a day when you get a notification at a random time.

“You never know when you’re going to get that message from BeReal and that’s the fun of it,” Howell said.

The app gives you two minutes to post, and in my own testing, I was surprised to find that it captured both the front and back cameras at the same time.

“It’s really meant to be, share who you are in this moment and that’s okay, it removes the stigma of not being perfect,” Howell said.

You can retake, but there are no previous photos being taken from your camera roll, no filters, and no edits. You can caption your photos and comment.

The only way to see your friends’ photos is to post your own picture and if you post late, your picture is marked so your friends can know.

“It allows me to be okay with sharing the mundane of my life because that’s the kind of thing,” Howell said.

BeReal’s feed is not as exciting as that of Instagram or TikTok. Photos aren’t necessarily inspiring or idealized versions of life – they’re just moments you can have every day. Checking email on the computer, hanging out with friends or drinking coffee.

Still, it feels like a more personal glimpse into one’s real life, and that’s it.

Howell concluded, “I have a better understanding of who that person is and what their life is really like and it makes me feel more connected to them as a person.”

One big problem, at least for now, is that your friends probably aren’t on the app yet, which makes the feed even less appealing. Only a few people from my entire address book were there.

Also, BeReal is just too small. Of course, as more people join the platform, all of this can change.
