ANTIOCH — A 76-year-old woman died late Tuesday after an apparent drive-by shooting on a city street, authorities said.
In a statement early Wednesday, police said dispatchers received a call at 7:02 pm Tuesday from a 29-year-old driver asking for help after his passenger, the woman, appeared to have trouble breathing.
Police responded alongside firefighters and paramedics near Canada Valley Road by Pinnacle View and Mountain View ways in the city’s Park Ridge neighborhood, and found the driver’s car.
When paramedics and officers began providing life-saving measures, they found the woman had suffered at least one gunshot wound to her back.
The woman was taken to a hospital, where she was pronounced dead. The driver was not hurt, the police said.
According to investigators who responded to the scene, the driver and passenger appeared to have been shot at by a person in an unknown vehicle riding along Canada Valley Road.
Police said they would not release additional information in what they called an active investigation.
At the scene Tuesday night, police blocked off the road, a main thoroughfare, from Vista Grande Drive to Palomino Way, with caution tape blocked the intersection and no one allowed to enter the neighborhood.
