Apple Inc plans to start manufacturing iPhone 5G modems from 2023 at Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co Ltd, which will reduce its reliance on Qualcomm Inc.
Apple is looking to implement 4nm TSM chip technology to mass produce its first own 5G modem chip.
Apple is developing radio frequency and millimeter wave components in addition to the modem. Apple is also working on its own power management chip specifically for the modem.
Apple’s move is aimed at integrating TSM chips with its own mobile processor, gaining more control over hardware integration capabilities and improving chip efficiency.
Qualcomm recently confirmed that its iPhone modem order share will fall to about 20 percent in 2023.
Apple is using 5nm TSM chip manufacturing for iPhone’s new 5G modem to develop and test the chip.
Apple will also use 4nm TSM technology for its iPhone processor in the second half of 2022.
Apple plans to use 3nm technology for iPhone processors by 2023.
QCOM shares closed down 0.13 percent on Wednesday at $ 180.71.
