Argentina asks the United Kingdom to resume talks for the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands

The Argentine government on Thursday asked the United Kingdom to restart talks for the sovereignty of the Malvinas Islands and invited it to a meeting to discuss the issue at the UN headquarters in New York.

there is another chapter in request Argentina’s long claim to islands in the South AtlanticCurrently under British control and whose dominance disputes led to a two-month war in 1982, the South American country was ruled by a military dictatorship.

Argentina’s foreign minister, Santiago Cafiero, “drafted a proposal to resume negotiations for sovereignty in the Malvinas question”, along with James Cleverley, the British secretary of state for foreign affairs, on the sidelines of the G20 foreign ministers’ summit in India. In a meeting in the framework, reported the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Argentina.

In a statement, the Foreign Ministry said, the Argentine government “invited to hold a meeting to settle the agenda of the talks at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.”

Argentina also said it would end the cooperation agreement known as “Foradori-Duncan”, signed seven years earlier.

The British response, which seemed to close the discussion on sovereignty, came quickly.

Cleverly said on his Twitter account, “The islanders have the right to decide their own future: they have chosen to remain a self-governing British Overseas Territory.”

The disputed archipelago, known in English as the Falklands, lies about 600 km from the Argentine mainland.

The United Kingdom’s Ambassador to Argentina, Christy Hayes, expressed regret at the Argentine government’s decision to finalize an agreement that seeks to strengthen the link between the two countries.

“In 2016, Argentina and the United Kingdom reached a historic agreement that, among other things, began the process of identifying the fallen on the islands after more than 30 years,” Hayes said on his Twitter account.

“We regret that the Government of Argentina has now decided to abandon this important agreement.”
