Argentina: They demand a universal wage due to inflation

Buenos Aires ( Associated Press) – Social organizations on various highways in Argentina on Wednesday called for a universal wage for the unemployed and workers whose incomes are unable to offset rapid inflation.

Protests on dozens of routes on the outskirts of Buenos Aires and several of the country’s provinces are led by the Workers’ Union of the Popular Economy (UTEP), which has links with Alberto Fernandez, the Peronist government that took office in late 2019. The earnings liquefaction landscape has been cracking in recent months.

He and other groups call for an improvement in workers’ purchasing power, compared to an accumulated inflation of 36.2% so far this year and 64% year-on-year in June.

“That the President will fulfill his promise upon winning the election, which was to begin with the last ones … Many of us are very disappointed and we still have some hope that his heart will soften and that he will take measures that They have it to take.”

This claim is getting bolstered by the continuous social protests that have been taking place in the country in recent weeks. It is opposed by a sector of the ruling coalition that answers to the President, but is promoted by a wing headed by Vice President and former President Cristina Fernández (2007–2015).

Grabois also highlighted the need for this additional income for the unemployed, informal workers and those who make up the formal sector of the economy, who cannot make a living.

The social leader affirmed that “there is money” to cover this expense and that “corruption and big companies are subsidized and people need to eat.”

According to a bill presented to Congress by the representative of the left-wing frontier Patria Grande, a political space that responds to UTEP, universal basic pay would be equal to the amount of a basic food basket for an adult, approximately 14,500 pesos ($106 )) , and will benefit more than 7 million people.

According to measurements for the second half of 2021, poverty in Argentina affects 37.3% of the population of about 47 million people, although analysts believe it has increased due to inflation.
