Associated Press source: Grizzlies traded 2 picks in round 1 for LaRavia

Memphis, Tennessee. ( Associated Press) – Jake LaRavia wasn’t just worth the first round pick. From the point of view of the Memphis Grizzlies, he was worth two of them.

The Grizzlies moved the 22nd and 29th picks in the NBA draft on Thursday to Minnesota for the 19th pick, which was LaRavia, the 6-foot-8 forward from Wake Forest, according to a person familiar with the negotiations who spoke to the Associated Press. on condition of anonymity because they have not yet been approved by the league.

Auburn’s Walker Kessler was selected 22nd and Kentucky’s T.T. Washington 29th, both of whom are heading to Minnesota, a source said, pending the league’s trade decision.

It was all part of a busy overnight move for the Grizzlies, who also secured the rights to No. 23 pick David Roddy of Philadelphia in another trade. Roddy and injured veteran quarterback Danny Green were sent to Memphis to retrieve De’Anthony Melton, another person with direct knowledge of the matter told the Associated Press.

LaRavia began his college career at Indiana State and then moved to Wake Forest. His move to the ACC improved his game, averaging 14.6 points, 6.6 rebounds and 3.7 assists last season, along with 1.7 steals.

LaRavia shot 56% from the field overall, including 38% last season for the Demon Deacons.

The Grizzlies had great success last season, going from a playoff finish after a tournament play-in in 2021 to the second-best record in the league last season (56-26). Memphis was eliminated in the Western Conference Semifinals by the Golden State, future NBA champions.

And part of last season’s success was achieved without All-Star and all-time leading scorer Ja Morant, who missed 25 regular season games with injuries.

Memphis went 20-5 in those games, a testament to the team’s chemistry and depth.
