Astros beat Guardians 9-3 on Mancini homer

CLEVELAND ( Associated Press) — Trey Mancini hit a pair of homers, including his first career Grand Slam, and led the Houston Astros in a 9-3 win over the Cleveland Guardians on Friday with five RBIs.

Astros manager Dusty Baker tested positive for COVID-19 before the game. He was replaced by bench coach Joe Espada against Cleveland.

Mancini, acquired from Baltimore on Monday to edge a dynamic Houston lineup, hit a single homer in the second inning and capped a five-run rally in the third with a base-clearing drive over the left-field fence.

The player, who started the duel as a designated hitter, has home three times in four games with Houston. The Astros acquired him in a three-team trade that also involved Tampa Bay.

Mancini missed the 2020 season with stage 3 colon cancer. He returned to the field last season and was named American League Player of the Year. He has been scoring .268 runs for Baltimore this season with 10 home runs and 41 RBIs.

Framber Valdez (10-4) gave Emed Rosario a solo homer in the first. Lefty held Cleveland to seventh when Luke Mel and Miles Straw scored.

For the Astros, Puerto Rican Martín Maldonado scored 3–2 and scored a run; Venezuela’s Jose Altuve scored 5-3 and scored a run; Cubans Yordan Alvares scored a run and 5-2 with an RBI and Yuli Guriel 5-1 with an RBI; and Dominican Jeremy Pea 4-0.

For the Guardians, Dominican Amade Rosario scored 5-1 and scored a run and Oscar Gonzalez 4-1; and Venezuela Jose Ramirez 3-1.
