Austin Butler ‘arrived at the hospital’ day after finishing ‘Elvis’ biopic

Moving on to the Jared Leto levels of acting, Austin Butler remained as Elvis Presley for nearly three years and transformed into the hip-swiveling king of rock and roll for the upcoming biopic of Baz Luhrmann.

While the former may have rested in a 12-day desert meditation retreat, Butler had a little more trouble with the role after production wrapped, resulting in an unexpected medical emergency.

“The next day I woke up at four in the morning with severe pain and was rushed to the hospital,” the actor told GQ in a profile published on Wednesday. “My body started to shut down the day after I finished Elvis.”

Butler eventually recovered, but was diagnosed with a “virus that simulates appendicitis and spent a week in bed,” according to the outlet.

The film chronicles the great artist’s relationship with his manager, Colonel Tom Parker, played by Tom Hanks. To portray Presley, Butler worked with a movement coach, covering the walls of his apartment with photographs and memorabilia and adopting a Southern twang, which he, somewhat confusingly, still speaks of. Despite his Anaheim, California upbringing.

The actor beat out a number of high-profile talents for the role, including Ansel Elgort, Miles Teller and Harry Styles, after sending an emotional video of himself performing “Unchained Melody”, which Luhrmann commented was “having a breakdown”. Was. “

“With whom you can really lose touch,” Butler said of his extensive preparation. “And I definitely had that when I ended ‘Elvis’ — not knowing who I was.”

He also traveled to Graceland to spend time with the singer’s ex-wife, Priscilla Presley. He has lent his support to the film, which he described as “brilliant and creative,” praising the actor’s portrayal as “excellent”.

“She looked like an angel,” Butler recalled of their meeting. “I later walked down the hall with an eagle with tears in my eyes.”

The two apparently made quite a friendship, posing together on the red carpet at the 2022 Met Gala earlier this month.

But it was Hanks who eventually helped ground Butler back to reality after encouraging the 30-year-old star to “read something that has nothing to do with” the task at hand.

Butler said, “That allowed me, because up to that point, I was only reading everything with Elvis.” “I was only listening to Elvis. It was Elvis’ influence and Elvis himself and nothing else.”

“Elvis” hits theaters on June 24.
