Austria announces quarantine and vaccination for everyone.

Austria will impose nationwide isolation on Monday and mandate coronavirus vaccinations next February, Chancellor Alexander Schallenberg said Friday. This is the first such isolation in a European country since spring and the first national vaccination mandate on the continent.

“Nobody wants isolation – isolation is a last resort, a crude tool,” said Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein. “Blocking is always an imposition, but it is the most reliable tool we have to break this fourth wave.”

Most aspects of public life in Austria will be suspended for at least 10 days due to the quarantine, which will affect both vaccinated and unvaccinated people.

Measures reminiscent of those introduced by European countries before vaccines became available follow other recent restrictions, including isolation for unvaccinated people and planned lockdowns in two states that have done little to reduce infection rates.

Under the new rules, people will only be allowed to leave their homes for vital purposes such as grocery shopping, work or basic exercise. Only supermarkets and convenience stores will be able to stay open.

The country, which registered 14,212 new cases of coronavirus in 24 hours on Thursday, has one of the highest infection rates in Europe.

Austria also has one of the lowest vaccination rates in Western Europe, with 66 percent of the population fully vaccinated.

“There has been a political consensus for a long time that we do not want mandatory vaccinations in this country,” said Mr Schallenberg, announcing the new measures. “But we have to face it.”
