Barbie, the Greta Gerwig film inspired by the plastic doll of the same name, became the highest-grossing film in Warner Bros. history on Monday.
According to the Box Office Mojo site, it surpassed Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 with $1,342 million at the box office.
The title of the studio’s most lucrative film up to that point was held by the film starring Daniel Radcliffe, which raised $341 million in 25 weeks in 2011.
Now, by Wednesday or Thursday of this week, “Barbie” is expected to become the thirteenth film in history to surpass $600 million in US gross.
Starring Margot Robbie as Barbie and Ryan Gosling as Ken, the film has already broken other records, including being the highest-grossing solo film by a woman in history.
Last week, Barbie surpassed “Super Mario Bros. The Movie” at the domestic box office to become the highest-grossing title of 2023 in North America.
It’s also expected to be the highest-grossing film of the year worldwide, and to do that, it would need to surpass the $360 million the movie based on the Nintendo character made.
The final step in crowning the film as the highest-grossing film of all time by a woman would be to surpass the $1,000 million grossed by Jennifer Lee and Chris Buck’s Frozen II.
