The general secretary of Podemos and acting minister of social rights, Ione Belarra, showed his rejection of the visit of the president of the European CommissionUrsula von der Leyen, and the president of the European ParliamentRoberta Metsola, and the support shown to Israel in its war against Hamas.
“Not in our name,” the minister said in a short message published on the social network with the word “Together” as a show of support for Israel in the conflict.
Von der Leyen and Metsola were the first community leaders to travel to the area after the terrorist actions which left more than 1,300 dead in Israeli territory and released the attack of the Israeli Army against the Gaza Strip, where the offensive was launched.
“I came to Israel to express my solidarity with the Israeli people in the face of this wave of terrible terrorist attacks by Hamas,” the German conservative stressed in a message without mentioning Israel’s response.
For his part, Metsola agreed to focus on the message of unity in the face of the worst terrorist attack against Israel in generations, although he made it clear that a humanitarian crisis must be avoided. “Terror will not prevail. Our response is important. We can and must stop Hamas. And do what we can to mitigate the humanitarian consequences,” he said.
In this context, Podemos criticized on social networks the “total siege” of Gaza It represents a “genocide by mid-2023” and affirmed that the military confrontation between Hamas and Israel is a “consequence of daily violence” against the Palestinian population and the “illegal expansion” of the colonial project of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
He also criticized the “complexity and direct support” of the United States and the European Union (EU). in the face of the “indiscriminate” bombing that Israel has committed against the population of Gaza, which continues to be “massacred.”
