Ben Stokes retires from ODI cricket, took a sudden decision after losing to India

New Delhi: Ben Stokes, the dashing all-rounder who made England the 2019 World Cup champions, took a sudden retirement from ODI cricket. He has taken this decision after losing the ODI series against India on Sunday night. The 31-year-old Stokes, who was recently appointed as the Test captain of England, will play the last ODI of his career tomorrow i.e. on July 19 at his home ground in Durham. Actually, the three-match ODI series between England and South Africa is starting from Tuesday.

What is the reason behind retirement?

Ben Stokes issued a statement saying that he will play his last ODI for England on Tuesday. Stokes said, ‘This decision was very difficult for me. I have always enjoyed playing with my teammates. I accept that I am not able to give my 100% in this format. The England jersey deserves nothing less than this. It was not only that the workload was increasing on me, but I also felt that I was eating in the place of some young man, who can contribute a lot for England.

The death of Stokes means the end of an era
Even though England is considered the father of cricket. England may have played the first match of cricket in the 18th century, but it never won the World Cup. It was the miracle of Ben Stokes, due to which the British lifted the first World Cup on their own soil in 2019. Stokes played many memorable innings in his 104-match ODI career. During this, his bat scored three centuries, 21 half-centuries while taking 74 wickets with his medium pace bowling. Ben Stokes will now focus on Test cricket.

Born in New Zealand, but cricket for England

Ben Stokes may have a citizen of England today and he plays cricket from here, but he was born in Christchurch, New Zealand. His family still lives there today. Stokes, who played 83 Tests and 104 ODIs and 34 T20 Internationals for England, came to England at the age of 12.
