Berrettini reached the quarter-finals of the Queens Club

LONDON ( Associated Press) – Matteo Berrettini continued his quest to retain the Queen’s Club tournament title as he advanced to the grass-court quarter-finals after losing the first set to Denis Kudla on Thursday.

Berrettini claimed a 3–6, 7–5(5), 6–4 victory and would be one of only two seeds in the quarterfinals.

The second-seeded Italian defeated Andy Murray in the Stuttgart final on Sunday. Berrettini is rowing for back-to-back grass-court titles after missing three months due to hand surgery.

On a cold day in West London, Berrettini was not precise about his return.

But a key to reaching last year’s Wimbledon final, Berrettini’s powerful serve made the difference against American Kudla. The world number 82, who entered the main draw as a ‘lucky loser’, won the first set without facing a break point.

Berrettini hit three aces to get the tiebreaker in the second set.

The Italian took a 3–2 lead in the third set, but lost the serve immediately. Kudla’s unforced error benefited them and they again took a 5-4 lead.

After saving a break point in the next game, Berrettini sealed the match on his first chance with a backhand volley.

Berrettini have won 17 of their last 18 matches on the grass.

Seventh-seeded Croatian Marin Cilic is the second seed who is still in the running.

Berrettini will now face American Tommy Paul, who defeated Swiss Stan Wawrinka 6-1, 6-4.
