‘Best 4 years of my life’: Chico State graduates permanent class of 2022

CHICO – Hundreds of graduates of the Chico State College of Behavioral and Social Sciences threw themselves into their black and red gowns for the 2022 commencement ceremony on Saturday. Thousands of family members waited in the crowd with him – eager to hear the name of his declared grade.

Marla Newsom was texting a photo where she and her family sat watching their daughter. Newsom made a trip to Sacramento to see his daughter, Mikayla Newsom-Rouse, earn a Bachelor of Arts in psychology.

Newsom-Rouse began her academic journey in 2018 when she moved into her dormitory at Sutter Hall. Shortly after, she became a resident consultant and a supplemental learning instructor.

“We’re so excited to see him walk,” Newsom said. “But after that, she’s doing her masters at San Francisco State University.”

The start of spring 2022 on Saturday welcomed some students who had endured a series of local and worldwide hardships such as the 2018 campfire and the COVID-19 pandemic.

“For many of you, the fall and spring semesters were the first time you were on our beautiful campus to take classes and participate in activities in person,” said Chico State President Gail Hutchinson. “The Chico State experience may be different from what you imagined, yet you’ve preserved it and now you’re ready for what lies ahead.”
