Voters in the western state of California overwhelmingly rejected efforts to remove Democratic Governor Gavin Newson.
After calculating about two-thirds of the expected votes, Newsom defeated the Republican leadership’s removal efforts by 64% to 36% early Wednesday. He can now complete the remainder of his four-year term ending in early 2023, although he plans to run for re-election next year.
In the election on Tuesday, most voters voted “no”, saying that Newsom should not be removed. This makes the second question on the ballots meaningless: if most people want to remove Newsom, who should replace him?
If Newsom loses in the Democrats’ removal vote, conservative radio talk show host and former Republican President Donald Trump supporter Larry Elder will become governor because, by law, the 53-year-old Newsom cannot Become one of them. Replace your own list of possible choices. Elder led 46 other candidates, most of whom were Republicans.
Newsom is the second California governor to face a vote for removal in 18 years. In 2003, voters ousted the Democrat Gray Davis and appointed the Republican and famous Hollywood actor Arnold Schwarzenegger.
Newsom is also the second U.S. governor to survive a recall vote in nine years. In 2012, the conservative governor of Midwest Wisconsin, Scott Walker, lost in the removal vote, but ultimately lost in the 2018 re-election campaign.
Recall elections are common in California, the most populous US state, in which voters angered by the performance of elected public officials can petition to hold recall votes before an official’s term expire. Faced with a vote for removal.
The recall against Newsom was initiated by Republicans who opposed his strict COVID-19 regulations throughout the coronavirus pandemic, including closing schools and restricting small businesses such as bars and restaurants.
Newsom ignored one of his coronavirus orders and did not wear a mask or maintain social distancing when dining at a high-end restaurant in a California wine region last year. This did not help his political status in any way. Later, the anti-Newsom organizers obtained enough signatures from registered voters to force a recall vote.
As the results became apparent later on Tuesday, Newsom told supporters, “’No, not the only thing expressed tonight. We say yes to science, yes to vaccines, yes to ending the pandemic. ”
A few weeks ago, a voter poll showed close results on whether Newsom should be recalled. But because his fate was in doubt, the Democrats united around him, and he campaigned tirelessly.
National Democratic leaders including President Joe Biden and Vice President Kamala Harris visited the state to provide support at political rallies, and former President Barack Obama appeared in Newsom’s TV commercials.
Watch: California election
Elder won nearly 47% of the vote on Newsom’s removal, easily defeating other challengers. In a concession speech in the early hours of Wednesday morning, Elder urged his supporters to “keep mercy in the face of failure.”
But he also teased the possibility of competing with Newson in 2022 and declared: “We may have lost this battle, but we will win this war.”
Newsom will recall jobs, especially the appearance of Elder on the ballot, which is equivalent to supporting Trump, who is an extremely unpopular figure among California Democrats.
“We defeated Donald Trump, we did not defeat Trumpism,” Newsom said. “Trumpism still exists in this country.”
Newsom is a prominent figure among national Democrats, having previously served as mayor of the city of San Francisco and California lieutenant governor before he was elected governor in 2018.
