Biden will speak to the nation about Omicron on Tuesday as cases rise.

President Biden will speak to the nation on Tuesday to respond to the spread of the Omicron variant of the coronavirus, which has caused a spike in infections in parts of the country and sparked renewed concerns over the country’s health and economy in the coming months.

Mr Biden “will announce new steps the administration is taking to help communities in need,” said White House spokeswoman Jen Psaki. tweeted on Saturday, “while simultaneously issuing a sharp warning about what winter will look like for Americans who choose to remain unvaccinated.”

“We are prepared for an increase in the number of cases,” she tweeted in a follow-up post, and Mr. Biden “will detail how we will respond to this challenge. He will remind Americans that they can protect themselves from the serious illness caused by COVID-19 by getting vaccinated and boosted when they are eligible. ”

The comments will come as administration officials face new questions about how they will respond to the challenges of a pandemic that continues far beyond the administration’s expectations. Vice President Kamala Harris was criticized this weekend for telling the Los Angeles Times in an interview that the administration was overwhelmed by the new option and the previous option, Delta, which led to a spike in infections and deaths from the virus this fall.

“We have not seen the Delta approaching,” Ms. Harris told the newspaper. “I think that most of the scientists – on whose advice and guidance we relied on – did not see the Delta approaching. We have not seen Omicron approaching. This is the nature of this terrible virus, which, as it turns out, has mutations and variants. “

Mr Biden sounded the alarm about Omicron this month and also expressed hope in the face of it, expressing optimism that the fast-spreading option will not stop the country’s progress in recent months to regain a sense of normalcy.

After initially imposing a number of travel restrictions on certain countries, including South Africa, where the option was first discovered, Mr Biden responded to the option largely by pleading with Americans to get vaccinated, including booster vaccinations.

As for the unvaccinated, the president said Thursday: “We are looking at a winter of severe illness and death – if you are not vaccinated – for themselves, their families and hospitals, which they will soon overflow. But there is good news: if you are vaccinated and boosted, you are protected from serious illness and death – period. “

In recent weeks, Ms Psaki has repeatedly asked whether officials have revised their economic forecasts with Omicron in mind. On Friday, she told reporters aboard an Air Force One plane bound for South Carolina that federal emergency teams are helping communities cope with skyrocketing cases in hard-hit states such as Colorado, Michigan and Vermont.

“There is no new assessment that they have provided, or new recommendations that they have provided to date,” about the economic impact of the increased patient population, she said. “But obviously this is an internal conversation as we are looking not only at the new option, but at any eventuality – any spikes that we see in communities across the country. And, of course, we will continue to assess any new steps that need to be taken. “
