The Corona Police Department said that on Wednesday, October 13, a 41-year-old cyclist took off his clothes and made lewd comments on a 12-year-old student going to school in Corona.
The attack happened when the girl was on her way to Cesar Chavez Academy, a K-8 school at 1150 Paseo Grande. A message sent by the school to the parents said that the student quickly recovered.
Police Detective Daniel Cleary said that Corona’s Carlos Martinez hit the girl and knocked her down, stripped her naked and then made sexual remarks with the girl. The girl ran to the school bus, while passersby flagged off the police. Martinez was arrested after a brief clash with police, Clary said.
“The criminal was seen riding a bicycle without clothes. As soon as our school buses (sic) arrived, this person boarded straight on seeing our students,” the message to the parents of the school said.
Cleary said Martinez was booked at the Robert Presley Detention Center in Riverside on suspicion of attempted rape and assault with a deadly weapon on a minor. Bail was set at $50,000.
The school’s message said additional counselors were brought to campus to assist the students.
The Corona-Narco Unified School District was aware of the incident but no one authorized to speak to the media responded to a request for additional information on Wednesday.
