“Blockchain technology makes asking for lost boxes a thing of the past”

Dutch company Van Gelder Groente & Froot no longer has to worry about box return receipts. Since late last year, it has been testing an automated and digitized checkout management system. RTI Blockchain is helping this fruit and vegetable supplier with a platform that provides a real-time overview of where packaging is in both Van Gelder and its customers around the world. food service, Drivers use the mobile app to scan the box while loading and unloading. This scanning application can be integrated into the RTI blockchain platform.

Drivers don’t always catch the right box
“In this new system, each box in our group has a unique barcode that drivers scan when loading. If the driver scans a box earmarked for a different route, the system immediately indicates it. Very few boxes are scanned on a particular route, the driver sees it on the screen. He can’t pick up the wrong or wrong number of boxes,” says Demis van Kouwen.

Once at the customer’s home, the boxes are re-scanned. The RTI Dashboard, a shared portal between the supplier and the customer, notifies van Gelder and the recipient immediately that the shipment has been delivered. The return box is also scanned and removed.

Boxes contain barcodes; Pallets, RFID Tags
“Our trucks also have track and trace systems. As the vehicle leaves, the customer receives a message that it is on the way. We also want to start uploading pictures of the boxes to be delivered. For now, We use barcode boxes, but we are already considering using RFID tags for pallet loads. We tried it a few years ago, but the reliability was 90%. As soon as it reaches 100% , RTI Blockchain will implement RFID system for our pallets”.

From three people to a single control room processing containers in real time
Another advantage is the addition of real-time overview of all cash balances and movements, and time and cost savings in relation to losses. Van Gelder no longer needed three people to process the containers. “Not only did we save on labor costs, it was always a struggle to find people for this non-desirable job. Now we just have a travel supervisor who guides drivers and helps with questions or problems We need more IT support, but it doesn’t cost as much as three employees. It’s a huge project and we have to make some changes first. But it represents another big step for our company, Demis concludes.
