blood drive asks for donors

CHICO – In honor of World Blood Day today, the Vitalent Blood Bank will be hosting a blood campaign, although blood is needed year-round.

Countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day annually to raise awareness of the need for safe blood and blood products and to thank blood donors. Mexico is the sponsoring country this year, and the theme is “Donating Blood is an Act of Solidarity. Join the effort and save lives,” according to a press release.

To donate blood in Chico, visit the Vitalent Blood Bank at 555 Rio Lindo Ave. The timing of the center is from noon to 6 pm for whole blood donation. Those who want to donate only platelets can come at 11 am

Vital account manager Amy Fitzgerald said there will also be a summer classic blood drive on August 5 and 6.

“It’s a great way to donate if you can,” Fitzgerald said. “The need for blood exists every single day.”

Fitzgerald said appointments are encouraged, and potential donors can make an appointment by visiting www.vitalant.org or calling 893-5433. There is also a Vitalant app for cell phones and there are often mobile blood drives.

Fitzgerald said anyone who is healthy is encouraged to come and donate. 20 to 30 people are expected to donate for Tuesday’s drive.

“Come on, help and save lives,” said Fitzgerald.

Fitzgerald said blood donations drop in the summer months because schools are out for the summer so schools don’t have blood drives, and people go on vacation, so blood donation falls off people’s radar.

“The need for blood never decreases, but the donation decreases,” Fitzgerald said. “Donations are greatly appreciated.”

The annual Summer Blood Drive has three locations, in Chico, Redding and Yuba City. According to Fitzgerald, every two seconds someone in the United States needs blood. And while more than 60 percent of the population is able to donate, only three percent do. During the Summer Classic Blood Drive, T-shirts will be given out and pizza and ice cream will be offered.

“It’s a really big event,” Fitzgerald said.

According to Vital Communications manger Victoria Wolfe, blood is perishable and has a limited shelf life.

America’s blood center organizations operate more than 600 blood collection sites that provide the blood supply to nearly 60 percent of the US and a quarter of Canada. These blood centers serve more than 150 million people and provide blood products and services to more than 3,500 hospitals and health facilities throughout North America. According to a press release, all members of America’s Blood Center are licensed and regulated by the US Food and Drug Administration. For more information visit www.AmericasBlood.org.
