Body recovered after empty boat spotted on north-central Minnesota lake

RIVERTON, Minnesota – Authorities removed the body of a 69-year-old man from Dyrwood on Crow Wing County Lake on Tuesday after a citizen reported an empty boat in the water the night before.

The Crowe Wing County Recreational Unit and the Crowe Wing County diving team recovered the body of William Elliott at approximately 9:15 am.

The Crowe Wing County Sheriff’s Office said that at 6:05 pm on Monday, MPs responded to a boat accessing Little Rabbit Lake to verify reports of an unoccupied boat drifting 75 feet off the coastline. The caller also said that he saw a pair of socks and shoes on the dock.

With the assistance of the citizen, the deputies found an unoccupied boat and searched the surroundings, but could not find anyone. Upon landing, they noticed a vehicle with a trailer registered by the same owner as the boat, but they were unable to contact the owner. Due to the darkness, a more thorough search for the missing boatman was postponed until the next morning.

Elliott’s body was found Tuesday morning at a depth of approximately 17 feet 15 feet from the end of the dock on a boat launch. Elliot was taken to the Ramsey County Forensic Office for an unknown cause of death.
